Effective and Meaningful Communication with Parents

As Montessori educators, it’s easy to overlook the importance of effective communication with parents. We assume they understand the value of our child-centered methodology and holistic approach to developing soft skills and executive functions. However, our busy, multitasking parents may not always be aware of the intricacies of Montessori education or the benefits it offers their children.

To bridge this gap, we must re-evaluate how we communicate with parents. Gone are the days when occasional updates and limited classroom observations sufficed. Today’s parents, who are often educated professionals, seek transparency, involvement, and a sense of community. They want to know what their children are learning, how they are being taught, and how they can support their development. They may also face the challenge of being far from extended family and the pressure of avoiding parenting “mistakes” in an age of instant information.

As educators, it’s crucial to convey that parents are partners in their children’s educational journey. By adopting a more open and inclusive communication style, we can build trust, foster a sense of community, and empower parents to support their child’s growth.

What Should We Communicate to Parents?

  1. Montessori Methodology: First, we need to emphasize that Montessori education is a scientific, research-based curriculum that meets each child where they are. We need to help parents understand that each lesson is designed to teach multiple concepts and that practice and repetition are essential for development. It is a natural part of the process that children will revisit materials from earlier years as they refine their skills. Reassure parents that revisiting materials is a sign of progress, not regression.
  2. Community and Inclusivity: It is important that we highlight the inclusive nature of our community, welcoming all children and their unique needs. Share what their child is working on in class to alleviate concerns and provide peace of mind. Consider offering regular observation opportunities via Zoom to accommodate busy schedules, with the condition that parents keep their video and microphone off so that they do not become a distraction to the children.
  3. Professional Expertise: Reinforce that Montessori Guides and Teachers are highly trained educators, not childcare providers. Our role is to guide and support children through their crucial development years, instilling a love of learning, challenging them when ready, observing their needs, and sparking their curiosity.
  4. Significant Milestones: By communicating significant milestones rather than daily updates, we can reinforce that our Guides and Teachers are focusing on what truly matters – the child’s growth and development. Rather than share daily photos or general updates, share new lessons presented, concepts acquired, and leadership qualities demonstrated. This allows parents to celebrate their child’s achievements and feel proud of their progress.
  5. Teaching Methods: A critical factor in having supportive parents is helping them understand the rationale behind our teaching methods. By sharing new lessons and current lesson plans, we demonstrate our expertise in Montessori philosophy and child development. This transparency fosters trust and positions us as authorities in our field. It also helps parents feel more involved in their child’s development and paves a path of partnership between the parent and the Guide/Teacher.

When parents understand how our classrooms work, they are more likely to trust us as educators and appreciate the value we bring to their child’s educational journey. They can engage in meaningful conversations with their child about their day, explore areas of strength and challenges, and collaborate with us to support their child’s successes. They will also see how the soft skills their child is developing now will lead to executive functioning skills critical for future success.

By adopting a more open and inclusive approach to communication and sharing our knowledge and expertise, we build trust, community, and a partnership that empowers all parents to support their child’s development.
